How to calculate CPA
Cost per acquisition is ad spend divided by the number of results. A result is whatever you are paying for: a purchase, a lead, a sign up or an install.
If a campaign spends ₹50,000 and brings 120 purchases, CPA is 50,000 divided by 120, about ₹416.67. In dollars, $2,400 for 80 leads is a CPA of $30.
To plan, a target of 100 purchases at a ₹400 CPA needs ₹40,000, and ₹50,000 at the same CPA buys about 125.
How much CPA can you afford?
Your CPA is fine as long as it is below what one result is worth to you. For an online store, that is the break even cost per purchase: what an order leaves after product cost, GST, shipping, fees and returns. The break even ROAS calculator works it out.
If customers come back to buy again, you may accept a higher CPA on the first order, but only if you know your repeat rate from your own data.
For leads, work backwards. If 1 lead in 10 becomes a customer worth ₹5,000 in profit to you, a lead is worth up to ₹500.
What moves CPA
CPA is your cost per click divided by your conversion rate, so a ₹8 click with 2% of visitors buying is a ₹400 CPA. It falls when clicks get cheaper or when more of them convert.
- Creative: a stronger hook and a clearer offer raise CTR, which lowers the cost of each click.
- Landing page: a fast page, clear pricing, COD and reviews turn more clicks into results.
- Offer: a first order discount or a bundle can lift conversion enough to lower CPA, even after the discount.
- Tracking: if the pixel or Conversions API misses purchases, CPA looks higher than it really is.
CPA, CAC and ROAS
CPA counts ad spend only. Customer acquisition cost, or CAC, usually adds everything else spent on winning customers, such as agency fees, tools and discounts, so CAC is higher.
CPA and ROAS describe the same campaign from two sides: ROAS is average order value divided by CPA. A ₹1,200 order at a ₹400 CPA is a 3x ROAS.
Questions people ask
What does CPA mean in marketing?
CPA stands for cost per acquisition, sometimes called cost per action. It is what you pay in ads, on average, for one result such as a purchase, lead or sign up.
How do you calculate CPA?
Divide ad spend by the number of results. ₹50,000 for 120 purchases is a CPA of about ₹417.
What is a good CPA?
A good CPA is one below what a result is worth to you. For a store, compare it with your break even cost per purchase; for leads, with the share of leads that buy times what a customer is worth. Another brand's CPA tells you little, because their prices and margins differ.
Is CPA the same as cost per result in Meta Ads Manager?
Yes, when the result is the event you optimise for. Cost per result is spend divided by results, so for a sales campaign optimised for purchases it is your cost per purchase.
What is the difference between CPA and CAC?
CPA usually counts only ad spend for each result. CAC, customer acquisition cost, adds the other costs of winning a customer, such as agency fees, tools, influencer fees and discounts.
How do I lower my CPA?
Lower the cost per click or raise the share of clicks that convert. Test new creative and hooks, fix slow or confusing product pages, and offer COD or bundles if your customers want them.
