Safe Zone Checker for Reels, Stories, TikTok and Shorts

Drop in a vertical image or video and see where Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube Shorts put their buttons, captions and call to action. Anything in the red area may be covered. It is free, needs no sign up, and your file never leaves your device.

The template is a see-through 1080 x 1920 PNG of the safe zone and buttons, to lay over your design in Canva, Figma or Photoshop.

A guide, not the app itself. Buttons move a little between phones.

What is a safe zone?

Vertical apps draw their own layer on top of your video: the account name and caption at the bottom, the call to action button, a column of like and share buttons on the right, and tabs or a progress bar at the top. A safe zone is the part of the 1080 x 1920 frame that none of this covers.

Text, logos, prices and faces belong inside it. Anything outside it can be hidden behind a button or made hard to read by the caption.

How the safe zones differ by app

Instagram and Facebook Reels ads cover the most at the bottom, where the caption and a wide button sit: keep the lowest 35% clear, plus about 14% at the top. Stories cover less, about 250 px at the top and the bottom. TikTok has the widest right side, because its button column runs from the middle of the screen down. YouTube Shorts covers the bottom like Reels and a wide strip on the right.

The table below gives each margin in pixels. The apps shift their buttons a little between phones and with longer captions, so treat the lines as a guide and leave a little room.

How to design inside the safe zone

A few habits keep one video working on every app.

  • Design at 1080 x 1920 and keep words, logos and prices in the middle of the frame.
  • Put on-screen captions above the bottom third, not where the app writes its own caption.
  • Keep key text off the right edge for TikTok and Shorts.
  • Running the same video everywhere? Design for the strictest app: Reels at the bottom, TikTok on the right.
  • Check the whole video, not one frame: a price that slides in late can land under a button.

Questions people ask

What is the Instagram Reels safe zone?

For Reels ads on a 1080 x 1920 frame, keep about 269 px (14%) clear at the top, 672 px (35%) at the bottom and 65 px (6%) on each side. Facebook Reels ads use the same margins.

What is the TikTok safe zone?

Keep about 240 px clear at the top, 660 px at the bottom and 120 px on each side. On the right, from about 840 px down, keep 300 px clear for the button column.

What is the YouTube Shorts safe zone?

Keep about 288 px clear at the top, 672 px at the bottom, 48 px on the left and 192 px on the right of a 1080 x 1920 frame.

What is the Instagram Stories safe zone?

Keep about 250 px clear at the top and the bottom of a 1080 x 1920 Story. The sides are free.

Are these exact for every phone?

No. They are the margins most ad teams work to, based on the apps’ ad guides and on measurements of their templates. Buttons move a little with screen shape, caption length and app updates, so leave some room and check the platform preview before launch.

Can I check a video, not just an image?

Yes. Add an MP4 and it plays inside the frame with the safe zone and buttons on top. Pause anywhere and download that frame.

What is the safe zone template?
